A gift to the city, and to its residents.

It’s difficult to say exactly how the Domäne Krems came in to being, but it is known for a fact that Duke Leopold IV (1371-1411) and Ulrich von Dachsberg (Imperial Castle Warden of Krems) both deeded vineyards to the city.

And thus Domäne Krems, with more than 550 years of history, can lay claim to being one of the oldest wine estates in Austria.

Domäne Krems has made its home in the heart of the city since 1915, vinifying their noble wines there.

The grapes come exclusively from Krems, in Niederösterreich.

A modern city, home to centuries of tradition.

Historic terroir,
born of the Danube River.

The vineyards belonging to the City of Krems are situated at roughly 200–400 metres above sea level. An extraordinarily distinctive microclimate prevails here:  the valley opens itself to the east, allowing access to the warm currents of Pannonian air, while in the north, where the Waldviertel borders on the Kremstal, cool air flows into the valley, which makes for marvellous dynamic tension between warm days & cool nights. Here too the Danube comes into play, since the great river’s influence facilitates the amalgamation of the two weather systems.

The soils in Krems are so varied and complex, it’s hard to find another place with as great a diversity: in the west end of the city one most frequently encounters primordial rock – the Urgestein that made the Wachau famous – but the closer one comes to the river banks, the greater proportion of sand and gravel in soil. But it actually is the loess (blown in by the winds) that provides the wines with their extraordinary structure and the elegant spiciness. These soils evolved during the most recent Ice Age, some 300,000 years ago – ideal conditions for viticulture!

Terroir wines with character.

The authentic and sophisticated wines in Domäne Krems’s product portfolio bring the unique and distinctive terroir found within the city limits of Krems right to the fore. Jancis Robinson, the doyenne of English wine writers, shows her enthusiasm: ‘As one of the oldest wineproducing estates in Austria, with more than 550 years of history, the young team assembled around charismatic winemaker Fritz Miesbauer does not rest upon tradition, but strives continually to achieve better quality.’

Spicy, mineral-driven & opulent:  something here for everyone!

GRÜNER VELTLINER

The Veltliner is impressive for its fine array of spices in the nose, accompanied by the delicate scent of green apples. On the palate the wine is fruit-forward and full-bodied, but is sculpted by the racy acidity into a spirited finish.

Pairs well with: hearty snack foods, grilled poultry, salads, Wiener schnitzel

RIESLING

The first impression is one of delicate stone-fruit aromas, but a pleasing scent of candied lemon rind soon develops. An extremely elegant and mineral-toned interplay of fruit and acidity dances on the tongue; Riesling, how it should be.

Pairs well with: all sorts of fish, carpaccio, egg dumplings, meat pastries

PINOT BLANC

The very first impression evokes freshly roasted almonds and blossom honey. But it’s really on the palate that this Pinot Blanc reveals its full expressiveness: a brilliant form, where thrilling fruit makes one long for the next sip.

Pairs well with: fresh shellfish, veal goulash, vegetarian dishes
